About Lambretta Scooters

Lambretta is an Italian scooter manufacturer and it is a very familiar name all around the world. The name Lambretta was derived from the river Lambro that passes through the district Lambrate. The Lambrate district is the birth ground of this iconic scooter brand. Ferdinando Innocenti, the founder of Lambretta initially use to run a steel tubing factory in Rome but he took the business to Milan in 1931. After his factory was destroyed during world war 2, Innocenti saw the future of affordable private transport and he decided to produce a motor scooter. The initial design of Lambretta was inspired by Cushman scooters made in the United States that were used as a mode of field transport for the paratroops and marines. Ferdinando Innocenti gave the assignment to Aeronautical engineer General Corradino D’Ascanio to design a robust and affordable scooter that should be easy to drive and be able to carry a passenger.

D’Ascanio introduced a vehicle that was built on a spar frame with a handlebar gear change and the engine was mounted on the rear wheel. But D’Ascanio had a fallout with Innocenti because he wanted to manufacture his frame from rolled tubing instead of using a stamped spar frame. After having a fallout with Innocenti, D’Ascanio took his design Enrico Piaggio whoc later produced Vespa. The final design of Lambretta was completed by Cesare Pallavicino and Pier Luigi Torre. The production of Lambretta scooters started in 1947. The 125M was the first Lambretta which came with a 125cc engine that was mated to a three-speed gearbox with a foot-operated gear shift. Lambretta’s were also manufactured under license in other countries like Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Spain, and India. Automobile Products of India began assembling Lambretta scooters in India in the 1950s. The first scooter model in India was a 48c Li first series.

The company soon acquired the license to manufacture the Li150 series model and it was sold until 1976. Scooter India Ltd, a state-run company brought Lambretta manufacturing and trademark rights in 1972. Innocenti employees helped set up the factory in India as all the manuals and machinery instructions were in Italian. The Vijay Delux/DL was the first Lambretta scooter model launched after SIL took over Lambretta. SIL stopped the production of these scooters in 1997. Innocenti S.A. is based in Lugano, Switzerland and it owns the international trademark Lambretta. The company made a comeback in 2017 at the EICMA auto show. Currently, there are three scooter models in the Lambretta portfolio which are sold across certain European countries. The brand is also developing an electric scooter which is expected to be revealed soon. Lambretta has announced it will re-enter the Indian market with a range of new scooters including an all-electric model.
