About LML Scooters

LML short for Lohia Machines Private Limited was founded in the year 1972. The company during its initial days was in the business of manufacturing synthetic yarn. LML entered the automotive industry in the year 1984. The company signed a technical collaboration agreement with the Italian brand Piaggio to set up a scooter project. Later on in 1990 both the companies became partners with an equal stake of 23.6% each. The first LML Scooter was launched in 1993 and it became an instant success in the Indian market. LML collaboration with Piaggio came to an end in the year 1999 due to business differences. Even after the disassociation from Piaggio, LML continued manufacturing its classic-styled steel body star scooter model with a 2-stroke engine. Some of these scooters were also sold in the United States with the name Stella and in the UK as A.K. International.

LML also produced 50cc scooters that were derived from the Benelli S50. The company signed an agreement with Daelim Motor Company of South Korea in 1999 to manufacture four-stroke bikes. Eventually, LML failed to compete with new entrants like Honda, Suzuki, and TVS in both the motorcycle and scooter segments. The company issued a notice of insolvency on 2 June 2017 and it has been defunct since then. However, LML has announced that they are re-entering the two-wheeler industry with new products. LML will start its second journey by launching electric scooters and bikes in the Indian market. The company has an extensive plan to enter the electric two-wheeler segment in India and LML is planning to invest around Rs 1000 crore over the next 3-5 years. The new LML scooters will be equipped with new-age tech and features to compete with the likes of Ola, Ather, TVS, and Chetak.
