About Vespa Scooters

Vespa is a premium Italian scooter brand from the Piaggio house. The parent company Piaggio initially was in the aeronautical industry but after world war 2, Enrico Piaggio the son of Piaggio’s founder Rinaldo Piaggio made a decision to leave the aeronautical industry and shifted its focus to the personal mobility industry. Renzo Spolti and Vittorio Casini designed the first two-wheeler from Piaggio that was know as MP5. Enrico Piaggio was not happy with the MP5 and he contacted Corradino D’Ascanio to redevelope this scooter. D’Ascanio presented a completely new MP6 prototype with improved design and mechanics. On seeing the MP6 prototype, Enrico Piaggio exclaimed “It looks like a wasp!” and he named this new scooter Vespa.

Piaggio filed the patent for Vespa Scooter in April 1946 and the patent was approved in December the same year. The company presented the scooter to the press at Rome Golf Club and it made its public debut at the 1946 Milan Fair. The initial sales were slow but they started to take off from 1947. Piaggio sold 2,500 Vespa scooters in 1947 and sales numbers grew to over 60,000 by 1950. Vespa was getting popular and a lot of Vespa clubs were opened throughout Europe. In the 1950s Vespa’s were being manufactured under licence in France, Belgium, Germany, United Kingdom, and Spain.

Vespa entered the Indian market in the 1960s in a Joint venture with Bajaj Auto. Piaggio licensed the production of the Vespa scooters to the Indian manufacturer but it ended in 1971 when Piaggio’s license was not renewed. Piaggio also partnered with LML motors in 1983, but it was also ended in 1999 due to a dispute between the two companies. Finally, the Iconic Vespa brand re-entered the Indian market in 2012 without any local partner. In 2012, Auto Expo the brand revealed its range of scooters for the Indian market. Fast forward to now, Vespa is one of the leading premium scooter brands in India and that brand has currently 13 models in their Indian line-up. The brand is also planning to launch new models in India including an electric scooter soon.
